The inverter input voltage is equal to the voltage of the battery bank voltage. Inverters with a 24 volt input therefore require a 24 volt battery bank.
24 volt inverters are typically used for mobile applications (such as trucks or motorhomes/RV's), or small to medium stand alone (Remote Area Power Supply) systems for homes and farms that are not connected to the electricity grid. An advantage of 24 V systems over 12 V systems is that they have half of the current for the same power draw, which means lower voltage drop losses.
